The hot topic of the night originally was to be the appointment of a new board member to fill the vacancy left by John Wladar at the September meeting, but a court hearing started at 1 p.m. today because the board has failed to fill the vacancy within 30 days.
There is no agenda posted anywhere on the school district's Web site. In fact, in looking for the agenda/minutes page, you will discover it is no longer an option on the board's page on dvsd.org. There also is no agenda posted on the "community bulletin" page, either. One of these months.

Just came from court. Judge ruled that the statute is clear - after 30 days the judge "shall" make the decision - so he will! He took statements from each of the 5 of the 7 candidates who were there. Marasas and Balton were not present but submitted resumes. Members of the board were given the opportunity to support their "favorite" candidate. Now it is in the hands of the judge. He will decide by noon tomorrow. Would not want to be in his position. It will be a hard decision.
I think it was a good decision by the Judge. It is pretty ridiculous that the board seemingly thought that they were above the law. Thanks for the update, Mary.
Were all the current board members present?
No, Diane French and Ed Silverstone were not present.
I believe that Ed showed up near the end.
I agree with three of the six School Board Directors that were there in time to support a candidate: Any of the six candidates that have shown an active interest in attending meetings would be great to have on the Board.
I was a bit surprised to hear Bob Goldsack indicate that he had to ask Mr. Marassa several times before he would submit his name. (With friends like that...) Mr. Marasa may be a fine person, but he has not demonstrated any interest in the Board.
It was hard for me not to rise in support of my fellow candidates. (I am really serious. I thought about it several times.) This process will improve the Board, regardless of who is selected.
Good luck to all, and see you at the meeting on Thursday!
Mary, Sue, Jack, Ryan and Bill - I wish you all the best. You all deserve to be commended for your passion and persistence. You are already winners in my book.
Members of the community have been asking for the posting of a board agenda for years. oops! This one seems to have missed Mrs. French's self proclaimed list of monumental accomplishments for the year. Must not be an election year, however.
