Opinion: Homebound should still be offered, confusion over meeting statements

Thanks to some investigation and reporting at rbfordv.blogspot.com, a quite unfortunate reality has surfaced regarding the school district's new alternative education program. As the media has reported, and we as have also published, the new alternative education program was supposed to be an option to expelled students IN ADDITION to the already practiced homebound education program.

Well, no, that's not the case and never was. How could have we all got it so wrong?

Commenter says homebound not offered?

If you haven't been on the Pike County Courier website, following the comments on the article about the alternative education program for expelled students, check them out.

One commenter wrote homebound is not being offered as an alternative to her child, and she doesn't know if she'll be able to provide transportation to the program held at the school. At the board meeting, the administration explicitly said homebound will still be an option to those who can't afford or provide transportation... so what gives?

The program, which will take place on weekdays after school from 4-7 p.m., will replace home-bound instruction for those who can attend. Instead of receiving five hours of schooling per week from a home-bound tutor, these students will receive 15 hours per week in five areas of study: science, math, English, social studies and health. Certified teachers will each teach their course one day per week, and administrator Mark McElroy and a special education teacher will both be present. The courses will be entirely computer-based and taught through Florida Virtual School Resources, an online program. Home-bound instruction will still be offered to students who are unable to attend.

DV to offer alternative ed to expelled students

Delaware Valley announced at the Aug. 21 school board meeting it will pilot an alternative education program to select expelled students this school year. For more information about the program, visit PoconoNews.net.

Be aware that updates on RB for DV will be fewer and less in-depth as I'm away and extremely busy at school, and especially this weekend as I move in at Syracuse. But do stay tuned, I'd still like to at least provide links whenever I have a spare moment.
