Wladar was one of three candidates in the 2007 election who ran under the Taxpayers United Association. He has been absent from meetings since May because of a health problem.
Board policy says the remaining board members have the authority to appoint a new person to Wladar's empty seat. In the interest of democracy, I believe they should appoint the next highest vote getter from the 2007 election who is willing.

FINALLY...Mr. Wladar did the respectable thing and resigned. Now things can move forward with a newly appointed DVSD board member.
You really need to find a hobby that doesn't involve the high school you no longer attend. At some point you need to move on. Unless you are in the school or have children in the school you really don't need to bother people who have a reason to be involved. Find yourself a nice boyfriend to invest all this free time in.

I do have a reason to be involved with the school district. I spent 13 years of my life there. How am I bothering anyone else by posting information for their benefit? I'm trying to help them, whether they agree or disagree with my viewpoints.
There were over 100 views of the blog Thursday. That suggests to me that my time here is not wasted. Managing the blog is not a very time consuming project. On the "side," I'm also taking 19 credits, working 16 hours a week, copy editing and reporting for the campus newspaper a few times a week, and regularly directing/producing/shooting/reporting for the campus TV station, whose Web media department I manage.
I suppose in your eyes practicing my career interests of new media and public policy to do good is a bad hobby. Maybe I'll take up drugs and unprotected sex instead, 'cause there's nothing else to do.

To say that because one isn't a student in the school or have children in the school that one shouldn't have a reason to be involved in their community is preposterous. Your comment holds no weight and you may need to learn the meaning of community.
Why was this not on the agenda for the meeting? I heard Bob had a candidate who was voted on during the meeting, this type of backdoor politics should not be accepted when it comes to our kids. A proper interviewing process should occur for many candidates before a hand selected member of the community is nominated. The public needs to come together to demand a more open and honest board.
There will be a voting meeting of the School Board to elect a new director to replace John Wladar on October 9 at 7pm at Shohola Elementary School. The district will ask for persons interested in filling the the vacancy to submit a resume. Interviews will be conducted by the Board. They plan to vote as a Board and appoint a replacement on October 9, 2008. The appointed director will serve until December 2009. If the appointed director wants to serve more than a year, the appointed director will have to run in the primary and be elected by the public for a four year term next November.

I hope the board selects the next highest vote getter from 2007 who is still willing to serve. I think that would be fairest because that person already has demonstrated they have support from the electorate.

That's a good question, and I appreciate your feedback. If you ever see any news articles about special education in the district, I encourage you to email them to me.
There are a few reasons I can think of to explain the lack of special ed coverage. First, since Wladar was the special ed committe chair, there have been no committee meetings during his absence. I include every link I can find to news about DV, and typically special ed students cannot appear in the news identified as special ed students because of privacy laws. An exception would be something like the Special Olympics, for which participants' parents sign a waiver.
If I have overlooked any news or district info that is publicly available about special ed, I encourage any reader to let me know so I can post it and better serve more readers. It is a particularly important part of our school district.
Shouldn't the opened seat go to the next highest vote getter in the past election or atleast one of the individuals that actually ran in the past last election?
They put the effort into it already and showed their commitment. I hope this is seriously considered by the current board when someone is chosen to fill Wladar's spot. Let's hope it is all done tactfully and the way it should be. It would restore some of my faith in some of the members of the school board.
"Fair" is rarely a useful word in politics. The law is what guides the process. The remaining directors can vote to fill a vacancy in any district (other than a first class district, where the court of common pleas of the county appoints a director) If the School Board can not make a selection within 30 days of the resignation, and 10 resident taxpayers submit a petition to the the court of common pleas of the county, that court selects the new director.
